HUMAN ACCESS in Wadi Hadhramaut organized a workshop in Seiyun city on the role of government health institutions in addressing harmful practices against girls and women, under the umbrella of the FGM project funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Several health personnel working in official health institutions attended the workshop, during which specialized doctors explained the importance of increasing public awareness, forming guidelines, and enforcing human rights-based policies and laws to combat female genital mutilation.

During the workshop, participants discussed and dialogued about the harmful practices of sexual mutilation of girls rooted in some social norms.

The female genital mutilation phenomenon is a violation of the basic human rights of girls and women, and a form of gender-based violence, leaving long-term physical, psychological and social damage and complications.

To safeguard girls' health, all members of society need to step up to criminalize these malpractices, led by health care workers, in accordance with basic ethical guidelines of health care.
