Overview of WHO

A United Nations agency operating in the field of health, symbolized by an acronym, WHO, was founded on April 7, 1948, and is based in Geneva - Switzerland. WHO is a directing and coordinating authority within the functions of the United Nations in the field of health. It also has important roles in solving health problems around the world by preparing health programs, setting controls and laws, providing health support to poor countries, and monitoring and assessing their health conditions.

WHO has six regional offices worldwide covering 193 countries, as follows:

  • Europe region
  • Southeast Asia region
  • Eastern Mediterranean region
  • Western Pacific region
  • The Americas region

WHO areas of action

The function of the World Health Organization is to address global health problems and issues, monitor health research programs, and provide technical support to member states. It also seeks to support development and health security and strengthen the health systems of member states, in addition to providing reliable health information and establishing an effective partnership with partners worldwide to implement health programs, follow-up and combat outbreaks of epidemics and diseases, provide health care for mothers and children, spread awareness and raise the level of health services globally.

WHO interventions in Yemen

The interventions of the WHO have contributed to assisting Yemen to obtain humanitarian aid by calling for relief appeals, directing data on the humanitarian situation in Yemen to provide technical support to the collapsing health sector in Yemen, searching for funding to provide salaries for health care workers in Yemen, and providing medicines for the war-affected groups, in addition to offering health services that include better nutrition and the health of the Yemeni child.

WHO also undertakes various emergency measures, such as distributing a vaccine against the emerging corona virus, and combating infectious diseases such as cholera, measles, and polio. It also endeavors to provide medical devices and equipment to health facilities in various regions of Yemen, cities, remote areas and camps that lack basic health services, in addition to providing numerous awareness and guidance projects.
